Why I wrote the book
I wrote Making Millions (available on Amazon here) for teens and graduates transitioning into work, to map routes to earning a living and becoming independent. I wrote the book as a direct result of what I learned in the process of building my business online. I learned things that I naturally assumed young knew as a matter of course. What I discovered was that many teens and graduates, whose iPhones and computers form such an intricate part of their lives, are not aware of the scope for earning and achieving career success that they have at the tips of their fingers. If you’re a teen wanting to know more about earning than you can find out in career guidance or a parent interested in next-generation career guidance for your family, this book gives young people practical guidance about how to start earning even in challenging market conditions and explore options until they find work they enjoy.
People face bigger challenges than ever entering the workforce. The world of work has accelerated five years in the space of twelve months during pandemic-induced lockdown and, as parents and teachers, we aren’t familiar enough with the job market to help young people negotiate or keep pace with it. It’s difficult to guide and direct our teens towards the right things to do or study when we’ve not heard of Fiverr, don’t know what dropshipping is, are unfamiliar with affiliate programmes and wary of the freelancing market. Making Millions crystallises the many ways of earning a living in the 2020s with relatable stories of businesspeople (not much older than your teens) who are crushing it in the internet economy.
Though major challenges persist in the wake of multiple lockdowns, the good news is that internet business is thriving. Engagement has increased, consumption has increased and in the UK alone over 113 thousand new businesses were registered in early 2020, an increase of 1.9% on previous year (UK Small Business Statistics, FSB). Skills are the new currency in the post-coronavirus world and through success stories of successful young businesspeople, “Making Millions” sows seeds of possibility and outlines alternative routes to earning for any young person worried about the future. There are jobs to be had if you hone your skill and know where to look. The book provides practical advice and guidance on how to start planning for the future and start earning asap. What’s more the businesspeople who feature in the book wouldn’t say they are particularly special or more advantaged than their peers. It was passion, drive and commitment that saw many of them see success before turning 20 and this is a vastly important message for young people. You are special enough to do it too. Follow this path.
But it’s not about the money. It’s about giving young people the tools to start earning early and giving them the confidence to explore options until they find something they love. It’s about making the working world work for them, not the other way around. We don’t want to pressure our young into building big businesses or living life in the limelight if that’s not for them. What we do want is to highlight the wide variety of ways to earn money in the 2020s and offer young people insights to help them pursue work they enjoy in such a way that it doesn’t always feel like work.
Who is the book for?
This book was written for any young person who wants to know more about the world of work than they can find out in career guidance at school. It’s here to inform and inspire those who look at all the traditional options and worry that there won’t be a place there for them. This book is for your teen or college graduate and every young person if they:
- Are worried about finding work
- Are confused by career advice
- Don’t want to go to college or university but want pointers about how to make a living and become financially independent
- Want to go to university but want to know how to earn money from the comfort of dorm rooms to help pay fees
- Want to earn but want the flexibility to work the hours they choose
- Want to monetise their social media accounts
- Want to learn more about passive income streams
- Want to know about tools to network and make contact with other young people in the same situation, seeking work
- Want to get noticed by and connect to Big Tech companies
- Don’t want to settle for the average 9-5 job
Young people need different role models now. They need to be inspired and to feel hopeful about what the thriving online business has to offer them. If you’re interested in next generation career guidance for your family, this book will give them tools to start earning even in the most challenging conditions and explore options until they find something they enjoy. Most importantly it will give them the confidence to take that first step to bridge the gap between study and earning.
As a psychologist and mother of a teenager, I want to reassure young people that they have time. Time to try things out. Time to regroup and reconsider. Time to have another go at something else. I want to tell them not to get caught up in fixed ideas about success because the job market has changed, bringing with it a host of new ways to earn and become independent. The good news is that for the intrepid there has never been more opportunities to earn money or ways to leverage earning into financial freedom. The key is to start now for big payoffs later.
